Mission Statement

apothecary [noun, a·poth·e·cary | \ ə-ˈpä-thə-ˌker-ē]

  1. one who prepares and sells drugs or compounds for medicinal purposes

  2. pharmacy

  3. student-run creative arts magazine based at the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai

In the literal sense, an apothecary is a person or a place that dispenses remedies for specific ailments. While we believe in the efficacy of evidence-based medicine and scientific discovery, we also believe in the power of writing and art as antidotes to suffering and pain. Rafael Campo taught us that illness is an uncertain muse, but we can decisively use the arts as a medium to rationalize, reflect, and revere a metamorphic moment or journey.

The Apothecary is dedicated to building an online and open-access magazine for narratives that weave together the realms of science, medicine and the humanities. We strive to create a receptive canvas for many diverse narratives and perspectives from students, faculty and staff.
