Self Discovering

Oil on wood panel, 16" x 24", 2021

"Self Discovering" is a tribute to the extraordinary personal development that accompanies  womanhood. Throughout my late teens and early twenties, I often felt as though I was  searching for my identity, my purpose, my face. My exposed lower figure and reaching hands  highlight the vulnerable and almost desperate search to create an identify for myself.

Wilting Blooms

Acrylic on plastic, 16" x 20", 2021

The yellow rose was a favorite member of my grandmother's garden. The juxtaposition of the  bright, flourishing flowers with the dark, contemplative stare I captured in the last years of her  life is meant to highlight the polarities of Alzheimer's Disease. One minute we would have her  in full bloom, the next we would watch her wilt.

Anna Bright’s work primarily centers around identity and its development. Her late grandmother's  struggle with Alzheimer's Disease is a frequent subject and source of exploration. This artistic examination of dementia complements her scientific work as a PhD student studying the molecular underpinnings of Alzheimer's pathophysiology. Her grandmother, better known to her as "Memaw", was a vibrant and expressive presence in her life. Memaw transitioned from  nurturing her girlhood curiosity to supporting the adventures of her womanhood. She credits much of her identity--as an artist, a scientist, and a woman--to Memaw, who lost her own identity to the very disease that serves as the focal point of Anna’s work.
