The Apothecary publishes fiction, creative nonfiction, poetry, and visual art. We accept submissions from any human in any pocket of the world, but we give preference to patients, caregivers, faculty, staff, and students affiliated with the Mount Sinai Health System and the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai.

We accept submissions from September 1 - December 1 and February 1 - May 1. We try to respond to submissions within three months. Please be patient; we are a student-run publication.

General submission guidelines:

  • Please submit your work through our Google Forms.

  • No more than three (3) submissions per genre per review period will be considered.

  • All written submissions should be typed and attached as a .doc, .docx, or .pdf file.

  • Please use standard fonts and formatting, including 12 point font and 1 inch margins.

  • All visual, audio, and performative art submissions should be sent as a .jpg, .png, .mp3, or .mp4 file.

  • Do not include your name or other identifying factors in your submission; editors review submissions blindly.

  • Simultaneous submissions are accepted. Please immediately email us (theapothecary.mssm@gmail.com) once your submissions has been accepted elsewhere.

We have zero tolerance for any “isms” (i.e. racism, sexism, classism, ableism, ageism, anti-semitism, heterosexism, etc.). We automatically reject these submissions and will notify the contributor.

We welcome all genres:

Fiction: Short stories, flash fiction, novel excerpts. Double-spaced. Submissions should be no more than 5,000 words.

Creative Nonfiction: Narratives, personal essays, memoirs, and public commentary. Double-spaced. Submissions should be no more than 5,000 words.

Poetry: Please submit up to 3 poems. Include all poems in one file.

Visual, Audio & Performance Art: Drawings, illustrations, paintings, photography, comics, music, dance or other visual mediums. Please send images in, jpg or .png format. Please send audio and video files in .mp3 or .mp4 format.

Patient Privacy Notice

Please maintain patient privacy and confidentiality at all times. Do not use any personal identifiers in your writing. For further guidance, contributors should review the confidentiality guidelines in the Health Information Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA). We encourage contributors to seek permission before submitting stories involving patients and to change identifiable information whenever possible and appropriate to ensure patient confidentiality and privacy.
