From the artist: The state-sanctioned murders of unarmed Black men produce long-lasting effects for the health, well-being, and prosperity of the Black community. In Black households, the conversation between parents and young boys about "being extra careful" to avoid authorities is just as common as explaining "the birds and the bees." I drew this piece because Black boys who eventually grow up to be Black men deserve protection. They deserve life. They deserve justice.
Using art as a form of self-healing, Taylor Harrell transforms raw emotions into drawings and poetry as a way to cope with the deep injustices of the world. Her work reinforces concepts of racial justice, the dismantlement of oppressive structures, and imagining a world that is driven by equality.
